# Your experience is probably not what is holding you back

The cycle of overthinking, waiting and applying without a strategy costs more candidates a medical sales job than a thin resume ever does.

Your experience may not be what is holding you back from landing a pharmaceutical sales or medical device sales job. In most cases the resume is not the problem. The cycle is.

The cycle looks like this: you overthink, you wait, and then you apply without a clear strategy. Three things keep it spinning.

## 1. You delay because you are unsure what to do

Uncertainty feels like caution, so it does not feel like a decision. It is one. Every week spent deciding whether to start is a week a prepared candidate spends getting in front of a hiring manager.

## 2. You doubt whether you are qualified

Most people who ask whether they are qualified are asking the wrong question. The question a hiring manager answers is whether your experience has been translated into something they recognise. Clinical work, B2B selling and technical work all carry over. Untranslated, none of it reads as relevant.

## 3. You get discouraged when applications lead to silence

Silence is not a verdict on you. It is what an application without a strategy produces. Applying harder into the same silence does not change the result, and it is the point where most candidates quit.

## What to do instead

- Decide on a target: the segment and the type of role you are going after, not medical sales in general.
- Translate your experience into the language of that role before you apply anywhere.
- Build the relationships that put a name to your application, rather than relying on the apply button.
- Prepare for the interview before you have one, so a screen that arrives early does not catch you unready.

Build the strategy that gets you noticed, trusted and hired. That is the order it happens in, and it does not start with another application.
