Overcoming 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐦 in Medical Sales: Dave’s Story
Dave spent 20 years building a successful career in pharmaceutical sales. But when he found himself back in the job market in his mid 50s, he started to feel like his experience was 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒎.
He sent out applications, landed interviews, but time after time, he walked away without an offer. The feedback was vague ⤵
“𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨’𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐭.”
But Dave couldn’t shake the feeling that his age was the real issue.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞:
🔴 “He’ll want too much money.”
🔴 “He won’t adapt to our team culture.”
🔴 “He’s overqualified and won’t stay long.”
These assumptions—whether conscious or not—can hold back exceptional talent.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟:
⚠️ “Maybe I’m just too old for this industry.”
⚠️ “They’ll always pick someone younger than me.”
⚠️ “No one wants to invest in me at this stage of my career.”
These limiting beliefs nearly stopped Dave in his tracks. But together, 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭.
Instead of apologizing for his experience, Dave owned it! He learned to position his age as an asset, not a liability. He showed hiring managers that he brought stability, expertise, and a drive to succeed.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭? A high-paying specialty pharmaceutical sales role with a company that values what he brings to the table.
𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫—it’s an advantage in the right hands. If you’re in your 50s or 60s and struggling in your job search, don’t assume the worst.
